Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan — the Jinsha River forcing through one of the deepest gorges on Earth, on the road between Lijiang and Shangri-La

Yunnan Road Trip — Dali, Lijiang & Shangri-La by Car

Lakeside old towns and mountain roads in China's southwest, strung together by car: Erhai Lake at Dali, Lijiang's lanes under the snow mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Shangri-La at the edge of the plateau.

The southwest, town by town

Yunnan's classic loop — Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La — is usually done with flights and backtracking. By car it becomes one continuous road story: the Stone Forest's stone maze, a lake ringed by Bai villages, an old town of canals under a snow mountain, then the road north past Tiger Leaping Gorge, where the Jinsha River squeezes between two 5,000 m ranges, up to Shangri-La's monastery town. Each leg is a half-day at most, so the towns — not the transfers — fill the trip.

Day-by-day itinerary

This is a sample itinerary, so you can see what each day actually looks like — the driving, the scenery and where you sleep. 1. Day 1

    Kunming & the Stone Forest

Arrive in the spring city. Drive out to the Stone Forest, where a sea of grey limestone pinnacles rises out of the green — the southwest's strangest landscape, and an easy first day.

  4. Day 4

    Dali → Lijiang old town

Yunnan road trip FAQ

Can we hike Tiger Leaping Gorge, not just view it?

Yes — the high trail is one of China's classic hikes. We can build in a half-day or full-day section with your guide while your driver meets you at the far end with the car. Tell us when you ask, so the pacing is planned around it.

Is the altitude a worry in Shangri-La?

Shangri-La is about 3,200 m — most travellers feel it as breathlessness on stairs for a day. The route climbs gradually by road, which helps; we keep the first evening there deliberately empty.
