Yunnan Tours & Travel Guide

China's southwest in one slow loop: Kunming's spring climate, Dali's lake, Lijiang's old town under a snow mountain and Shangri-La's monasteries.

Why visit Yunnan

Yunnan is the China trip people take when they want to slow down. The province stacks old towns, lakes and snow peaks along one natural line from Kunming to the plateau, and it's home to more ethnic cultures than anywhere else in China — Bai in Dali, Naxi in Lijiang, Tibetan in Shangri-La. The scenery changes every couple of hours; the pace never has to.

Top sights

Lijiang Old Town & Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Canals, stone lanes and Naxi courtyards in a UNESCO-listed old town, with the 5,596 m snow peak standing over the rooftops. Ride the cable car up the mountain in the morning, wander the lanes in the evening.

Dali & Erhai Lake

The Bai people's walled old town between the Cangshan mountains and Erhai Lake: the Three Pagodas, village markets, and a slow cycle along the lakeshore.

Shangri-La

Songzanlin, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, prayer-flag hills and Pudacuo National Park's lakes and meadows — the plateau world, at a gentler scale than Tibet itself.

Kunming & the Stone Forest

The "Spring City" is the province's gateway: mild weather year-round, the karst pinnacles of the Stone Forest as a day trip, and Yunnan's coffee, tea and flower markets.

Sample itinerary — 7 days in Yunnan

This is a sample itinerary, so you can see what each day actually looks like — the scenery, the meals and where you sleep. On a private trip the order and pace are adjusted to your dates; your confirmed day-by-day plan, with named hotels, comes with your quote.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Kunming

Ease in at Spring City pace — mild air whatever the month. Green Lake park and the flower markets if you arrive early; the Stone Forest's karst pinnacles as a half-day trip if you arrive very early. First Yunnan dinner: cross-bridge noodles, at the source.

    Stay: Kunming

Green Lake Park (Cuihu) in Kunming — black-headed gulls on the water, with willows, pavilions and pedal boats
  2. Day 2

Kunming → Dali — the old town & the Three Pagodas

High-speed train west (about 2 hours) to Dali, the Bai people's walled old town strung between the Cangshan mountains and Erhai Lake. Afternoon among the Three Pagodas and the old town's stone lanes and village markets.

    Meals: BreakfastStay: Dali

The Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple in Dali, with the snow-capped Cangshan mountains behind
  3. Day 3

    Erhai Lake at bicycle speed

A slow circuit of the lake's shore: cycling between Bai villages, Xizhou's morning market and tie-dye workshops, and a lake-fish dinner. This is the day the Yunnan pace — deliberately — gets into you.

    Meals: BreakfastStay: Dali

Erhai Lake at Shuanglang in Dali on a clear day — blue water, a cruise boat and flower beds along the shore
  4. Day 4

Dali → Lijiang — lanes under the snow mountain

Train or car north to Lijiang (about 1.5–2 hours). The UNESCO old town does its work by evening: canals, stone lanes and Naxi courtyards, with the 5,596 m Jade Dragon Snow Mountain standing over the rooftops.

    Meals: BreakfastStay: Lijiang

A canal-side stone lane in Lijiang's old town in Yunnan, lined with Naxi timber houses, small cafes and willow trees
  5. Day 5

    Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Up the mountain by cable car in the clear morning — glacier park, yak meadows and the Blue Moon Valley's turquoise terraces below — then a slow afternoon back in the old town, with Naxi music if the evening offers it.

  6. Day 6

Lijiang → Shangri-La — up to the plateau

The climb to about 3,200 m, by mountain railway or private car — deliberately placed late in the loop, once you're used to Yunnan heights. Songzanlin Monastery in the afternoon, Yunnan's largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery, and a gentle evening in Dukezong old town. No alcohol tonight; the altitude asks nicely, once.

    Meals: BreakfastStay: Shangri-La

Songzanlin Monastery in Shangri-La, its golden roofs above the lake shore
  7. Day 7

    Pudacuo National Park & departure

A gentle morning in Pudacuo — alpine lakes, meadows and boardwalks through the forest, taken slowly at altitude — then your transfer out, by air from Shangri-La or back through Lijiang.

    Meals: BreakfastStay: Departure day

Sunshine on the meadows and lake of Pudacuo National Park, Shangri-La — grass islands in still water below the forest

How many days?

Six to eight days for the classic loop: Kunming (1–2), Dali (2), Lijiang (2) and Shangri-La (1–2). Short on time, drop Kunming to a transit night and start in Dali. Yunnan is usually travelled as its own trip or a custom extension — tell us via the inquiry form or WhatsApp and we'll build the loop around your dates. It also drives beautifully: the Dali–Lijiang–Shangri-La line is one of the routes on our road trips page.

Getting there & around

Kunming is the hub, with flights and trains from every major city. High-speed trains link Kunming to Dali in about 2 hours and Dali to Lijiang in about 1.5–2 hours; Shangri-La is reached from Lijiang by mountain railway or private car. A car and driver earns its keep between towns — the stops are half the fun.

Best time to visit

March–May and September–November: dry, bright and mild in the old towns. Summer is the rainy season in the south of the province but the high towns stay pleasant. Winter is cold in Shangri-La (it sits at about 3,200 m) — clear skies, few crowds, warm coat non-negotiable.

Yunnan FAQ

Will the altitude bother me?

Lijiang is about 2,400 m — most people feel nothing more than a dry nose. Shangri-La is about 3,200 m, so we put it last in the loop, keep its first day gentle, and skip the alcohol that first evening. If altitude has troubled you before, tell us and we'll pace it accordingly.

Can I skip Kunming?

Yes — there are flights straight into Lijiang and Dali from several hubs. Kunming earns a night if the Stone Forest or an easy first day appeals; otherwise the loop starts happily in Dali.

Is Yunnan good with kids?

Very — lakeside cycling, old-town wandering and cable cars, at a pace that suits families. The one caution is Shangri-La's altitude for very young children; we can end the loop in Lijiang instead.
