Chengdu Tours & Travel Guide

Sichuan's laid-back capital: giant pandas in the morning, teahouses in the afternoon, and hotpot hot enough to remember in the evening.

Why visit Chengdu

Chengdu runs at a different speed from China's east-coast giants — tea is a daily institution, lunch is serious, and the city's most famous residents are black, white and asleep by noon. It's also the food capital most food-lovers would choose if they could only pick one.

Top sights

Panda Research Base

Go at opening: feeding time, climbing cubs and red pandas. By midday, it's a very cute nap exhibition.

People's Park teahouses

Gaiwan tea, ear-cleaning, mahjong — Chengdu's slow life on display.

Sichuan hotpot

Choose your chilli level honestly. The numbing-spicy (mala) broth is the city's signature thrill.

Leshan Giant Buddha (day trip)

A 71-metre Buddha carved into a cliff where two rivers meet — the largest stone Buddha in the world.

Sample itinerary — 3 days in Chengdu

This is a sample itinerary, so you can see what each day actually looks like — the scenery, the meals and where you sleep. On a private trip the order and pace are adjusted to your dates; your confirmed day-by-day plan, with named hotels, comes with your quote.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Chengdu

Pickup and check-in, then a first Sichuan dinner — your guide calibrates the chilli to your bravery. An evening walk along the Jin River afterwards, where the bridges and teahouses light up over the water.

  2. Day 2

    Panda base & teahouse Chengdu

Into the panda breeding base at opening, while the bears are awake — wrestling, climbing and demolishing bamboo; by 11am it's a very cute nap exhibition. The afternoon runs at Chengdu pace: gaiwan tea and mahjong-watching in People's Park, then Jinli old street by evening.

  3. Day 3

Leshan Giant Buddha — or slow Chengdu — & departure

A day trip to the 71-metre Buddha carved into the cliff where two rivers meet, seen from the water and from the cliff path — or a deliberately slow last day of food streets and a cooking class. Either way, the trip ends the Chengdu way: a hotpot dinner before your transfer out.

How many days?

Two days for the city and pandas; three with Leshan. Chengdu anchors the Pandas & Peaks tour and features in the Grand Tour.

Getting there & around

Direct flights from most Asian hubs and fast trains to Xi'an (~3–4 hrs) and Chongqing (~1–1.5 hrs). Tianfu airport is far out — your pickup is arranged, don't self-navigate it after a long flight.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn; pandas are most active in cooler weather, and cubs are usually viewable from late summer.

Chengdu FAQ

Can I hold a panda?

No — holding experiences were discontinued. The base's viewing is close and excellent when timed early, which is how we run it.

How spicy is the food, really?

Adjustable. Your guide orders across the table — some dishes mild, one or two at full Sichuan conviction.
