Guilin & Yangshuo Road Trip — Guangxi's Karst Country Roads
The Li River landscape, driven at country-road speed: roads threading between limestone peaks, farming villages the river cruises pass by, and a night up in the Longji rice terraces.
The karst, from the road — not just the river
Most people see this landscape from a cruise boat, four hours and gone. By car, Guangxi slows down: the road from Guilin to Yangshuo runs through the same theatre of limestone peaks, but you can stop at the viewpoints the boats pass, detour into the Yulong River valley's villages and rice fields, and finish the trip sleeping up in the Longji terraces instead of looking at them from a car park. Distances are short — this is the gentlest driving on this page — which leaves the days for walking, rafting and cycling rather than mileage.

Day-by-day itinerary
This is a sample itinerary, so you can see what each day actually looks like — the driving, the scenery and where you sleep. Every road trip is built per group: the order, pacing and overnight towns are adjusted to your dates, and your confirmed day-by-day plan, with named hotels, comes with your quote.
- Day 1
Arrive in Guilin
Meet your driver and guide. Gentle evening around the city's lakes and old streets — and a first sight of the karst peaks that will frame every drive this week.

- Day 2
Guilin → Yangshuo, along the Li River
Drive the riverside road south as the peaks close in — the same valley the cruise boats float through, at your own pace, stopping at the bends and viewpoints they can't. Option to take a bamboo raft for the classic stretch and meet your driver further downriver.

- Day 3
The Yangshuo countryside loop
A slow loop through the Yulong River valley: country lanes between rice fields and peaks, village stops, and farmhouse lunch. Cycle any stretch you like — your driver follows with the car, so the ride is exactly as long as you want it to be.

- Day 4
Yangshuo → the Longji rice terraces
Drive north into the hills to Ping'an village, then walk the terraces the Zhuang and Yao villages have carved over centuries. Sleep up in the terraces, above the valley haze.

- Day 5
Terraces at sunrise, back to Guilin & depart
Early light over the terraces, a village breakfast, then the drive back down to Guilin for your train or flight — or stay longer: this route pairs naturally with a few slower days in Yangshuo.

Guilin & Yangshuo FAQ
Can we cycle some of this route?
Yes — Day 3 is built for it. Your driver follows with the car, so you ride the stretches you like and hop back in whenever you've had enough. The Yulong valley lanes are flat and quiet.
When's the best season for Guangxi's roads?
Spring and autumn: March–May brings misty, painting-like karst; September–November is drier with golden rice around Longji. Summer is lush but hot and wet — the route still works, with earlier starts. See the best-time guide.
