Western Sichuan Road Trip — Kangding & Daocheng Yading
West from Chengdu the road climbs onto the Tibetan plateau: Kangding's river town, prayer-flag grasslands at Tagong, high passes, and Daocheng Yading's sacred peaks — paced gently for the altitude.
Up onto the plateau, one valley at a time
This is high country. Yading sits above 4,000 m, and the road there crosses passes higher still — so this route is built the way altitude demands: pandas and teahouses in Chengdu first, then Kangding as a stepping stone, a grassland night around Tagong, and slower days before the biggest heights. The driving is the point here — river gorges, flag-strung passes and valleys that change character every hour — but it's sequenced so your body keeps up with the scenery.

Day-by-day itinerary
This is a sample itinerary, so you can see what each day actually looks like — the driving, the scenery and where you sleep. Every road trip is built per group: the order, pacing and overnight towns are adjusted to your dates and how you're handling the altitude, and your confirmed day-by-day plan, with named hotels, comes with your quote.
- Day 1
Chengdu — pandas first
The panda base in the morning, while the bears are awake and eating, then a slow teahouse afternoon in People's Park. An easy day at low altitude before the road starts climbing.

- Day 2
Chengdu → Kangding
Expressway west, then the road narrows into the mountains and follows the river up to Kangding (about 2,560 m), the old tea-and-horse trading town where the plateau begins. Evening walk along the river that runs through town.
- Day 3
Kangding → the Tagong grasslands
Over the Zheduo pass (4,298 m) and down into open grassland: yak herds, black tents, and hillsides strung with prayer flags around Tagong town and its golden pagoda. A deliberately short driving day — walk the grassland instead.

- Day 4
Tagong → Daocheng
The long, beautiful leg south: high passes, the Litang plain, and valleys that empty out as you climb. This is the day the plateau really arrives — take it slowly, with stops whenever the light or a viewpoint asks for one.
- Day 5
Yading Nature Reserve
A full day in the reserve under its three sacred snow peaks — boardwalks through golden larch forest, glacial lakes at the foot of the mountains. Walk as much or as little as the altitude allows; the reserve bus and your driver handle the rest.
- Day 6
A slow morning, then back toward Chengdu
One more look at the peaks, then start down: either fly from Daocheng Yading airport back to Chengdu, or break the drive with a night in Kangding. We'll plan whichever suits your flights — and how you're feeling at altitude.
- Day 7
Depart Chengdu
Transfer to the airport or station — or stay on: Chengdu repays a spare day of eating. Hotpot is the correct farewell.

Western Sichuan FAQ
How is the altitude handled?
By pacing, mainly: Chengdu (about 500 m) first, Kangding (2,560 m) as a stepping stone, and slower days before Yading (above 4,000 m). If you're struggling, the route can be shortened — tell your guide early; that's what they're there for.
Can this route run in winter?
It depends on snow on the high passes — some weeks it runs fine, some weeks a pass closes. Tell us your month and we'll be straight about whether it's a good idea. Late spring to mid-autumn is the reliable window.
